EZ UPDATES

For readers of the EZ 66 Guide for Travelers, I have provided free online updates to help keep your Route 66 experience as current as possible. As you might imagine, Route 66 is constantly undergoing changes, some good, others not so. Businesses open and close, roads are re-routed and street names change.

Please check back here just before your trip for the latest info. Entries are dated as to when they were added.

If you wish to purchase your own copy of the EZ Guide, please go here.

EZ 66 readers have been helpful in keeping me keep the guidebook updated in between my own road trips, so if you discover something that needs to be addressed while on your journey, please let me know!

SUPPORT SMALL BUSINESS on May 08, 2023 at 1:12:35 pm [Print]
The EZ 66 Guide has supported small businesses on the route since 2005! We (my publisher and I) have never charged any business for inclusion, and will continue to give them our support at no charge.

Please continue to patronize the shops and diners and motels listed in the EZ 66 Guide. We are grateful to those shops that sell the EZ 66 on the Route. If you buy your copy at a Route 66 shop, please let me know!

Just to clarify, the Santa Fe sign on the former Railway Exchange Bldg is gone.

The Architecture Foundation formerly in that bldg is NOW the Chicago Architecure Center and moved to 111 W Wacker Dr (same website and phone).

Glenrio NM on May 08, 2023 at 12:51:08 pm [Print]
Work is proceeding on the new marijuana dispensary just across the TX state line in formerly quiet Glenrio. I much preferred the ghost town vibe of Glenrio before all the recent demolitions.
FYI: it is legal in NM but not in Texas. The dispensary is on the NM side, but to leave via a paved road you must go back to the exit thru Texas! Beware! Update: spring 2024. No further work has been done on the iconic First/Last Motel in Texas

Santa Fe NM on May 08, 2023 at 12:49:29 pm [Print]
The Silver Saddle Motel is now "The Mystic" and is now much more expensive, plus has lost the retro feel that I enjoyed on my last visit. It may well be a good motel in its new incarnation, but it is no longer the place I recommended.

The 1925 iron bridge with the brick deck on the old Ozark Trail option is currently closed. You can access the option by taking the new access road from the stoplight to the west if the just reopened Teepee Drive In.

ARCADIA OK on Apr 13, 2023 at 4:07:16 pm [Print]
Work is underway to widen a short stretch of 66 between POPS in Arcadia and the beginning of the 4-Lane west of Arcadia.

Also the section east of ARCADIA towards Luther is being widened.

ARIZONA ROAD CONDITIONS on Feb 23, 2023 at 1:34:57 am [Print]
ALSO: entering spring, I-40 thru northern AZ is in bad shape with many potholes! Drive carefully (sadly you must use 40 a lot...but i would NOT use it between Seligman and Kingman...66 is better!))

In this winter season, Check AZ511.com for road conditions before trying to drive thru AZ (Or call 511)

I have shared official notices and others at my FB page....EZ 66 Guide

TYPO ALERT!!! on Jan 27, 2023 at 3:32:40 pm [Print]
On NM page-8, I wrongly gave a distance of 150 miles that was cut off by the bypassing of Santa Fe in 1937.

The new mileage POST 1937 from Santa Rosa NM thru Albuqueque to Correo, NM (where both versions meet) is about 150 miles. I must have entered THIS mileage when i did the text!!!

The PRE 1937 mileage from Santa Rosa thru Santa Fe, Albuquerque and Los Lunas to Correo is about 235 miles.

Thus, the POST 1937 direct route from Santa Rosa to Correo saved about 85 miles. Give or take.

Only looking at the Santa Rosa to Albuquerque section, the savings was 62 miles.

Take these mileages with a grain of salt. They are a modern approximation. I need to dig back thru some old road maps to sample the actual pre-interstate era miles. And there were some route changes between 1926 and 1937 that would cause a few miles difference.
